Edgar Fernhout (1912-1974)
Portrait of Rachel Fernhout, 1935. Oil on canvas, 30.5 cm x 39.5 cm
"Edgar Fernhout painted this portrait of his wife Rachel Pellekaan about a year after they were married. Pellekaan worked as an instructor of fashion illustration, although she is also known for her delicate landscape drawings. In keeping with the fashion at the time, she replaced her shaved eyebrows with arched pencil lines. The slant of her hat and her lace collar convey a cosmopolitan self-confidence but her gaze suggests she is more of an introvert."

"He was the son of the artist Annie Caroline Pontifex "Charley" Toorop and the philosopher Henk Fernhout. Like his mother and grandfather, Jan Toorop, he was mainly working as a painter. He married Rachel Louise Pellekaan, draftsman, but no children were born from this marriage. After divorce, in 1947 he married Nannette Salomonson, from this marriage one son was born."
